
Deputy Head of Department, Department of Commercial Accounting, University of Johannesburg
As Deputy HOD in the Department of Commercial Accounting at UJ, Boitumelo Kuzwayo is responsible for the Teaching and Learning programme (T&L). This is across 40 staff members that teach approximately 1 500 students across the qualification. She holds an MCom in International Accounting.
In 2022, Boitumelo received the following awards:
- Mail & Guardian (M&G) Top 200 Young South Africans in the Education category. This is after the M&G received more than 6 000 entries.
- Academic of the Year at ABASA’s annual Women Leading Conference and Awards.
In 2022, Boitumelo was nominated by her head of department, the director of the school and the executive dean of the college to participate in the Emerging Leaders Leadership Development Programme at UJ focusing on the development of future leaders.
Boitumelo has contributed to providing previously disadvantaged students with access to quality education by being the project co-ordinator for two FASSET programmes (bursary and academic support). These programmes have supported some 400 students/beneficiaries since 2018. The pass rate on both programmes has averaged 90% since its inception. The total budget for the programmes was R33,9 million and Boitumelo led a team of 95 individuals including lecturers, tutors and mentors.
During her tenure at UJ, Boitumelo held the following leadership roles:
- Chair of the third-year group (2020)
- Subject Head for Auditing and Internal Controls (2019)
- Chair of the Professional Bodies and External Stakeholders Committee (2017)
- Co-ordinator for the Career Progression Series for students
Boitumelo is/was also involved in the following initiatives:
- Mentor to eight entrepreneurs on an enterprise supplier development (ESD) programme with the MyDough mentorship programme.
- Mentor at Endunamoo (2020/1) to a student completing her APC.
In 2016, she was an independent non-executive director for the Audit and Risk Committee at the South African State Theatre. She contributed to assisting the entity to go from a disclaimer audit opinion in 2016/17 to an unqualified audit opinion in the 2017/18 financial year.
Boitumelo also runs a professional services company called Illimite Consulting.
She is an avid lover of sports. She started and learnt how to cycle in 2020 with Matsimela Ladies Cycling Clinics (MLC). She now pays it forward to assist other ladies to learn how to cycle at MLC. She also completed two Comrades Marathon
