Commercial Director, Bidvest Tank Terminals

I remember displaying an interest in anything business-related from an early age, and grasped any opportunity to learn. My working journey started when I joined PwC in Durban and this has led me to my current position as commercial director at Bidvest Tank Terminals. Along the way, I quickly realised that people are vital to making a team work efficiently and completed my MCom in Leadership Studies. Working at Bidvest Tank Terminals has provided me an opportunity to grow in all aspects of my life. Some key projects I have been involved in at BTT are implementation of systems within the business, as well as several capacity expansions. During this time, I have helped the business grow whilst focusing on high levels of customer satisfaction.

I believe that people are first humans before they are employees. I focus on mentoring employees to be the best that they can be and providing an environment conducive to growth. I have encouraged several employees to advance their education and have mentored two young managers who, in turn, have developed their own leadership styles.

Leading a team is crucial. I do this by displaying empathy and genuinely listening to employees. I am solutions-driven and will assist anyone to find the optimal solution. In addition to this, I believe strongly in change and evolution; continuous improvement is the way forward.

I am involved in several community projects which range from charities involving animals to charities involving humans. I also spend a lot of time helping specific individuals/families in need.

Our country requires positive influence. As a young leader, my philosophy is one of equal respect for everyone. It is key to respect diversity and adapt our behavior based on understanding.

My mind has been focused on learning and being the best I can be. It has never been a competition with anyone except myself. One of my aspirations was to become a CA(SA): it has given me the platform to reach for my other aspirations whilst at the same time providing me with an opportunity to help uplift others in my professional and just as importantly, in my private capacity. In a time of momentous change, being a CA(SA) right now is the perfect time to keep your ethics sound and help become a catalyst in the much-needed positive chain reaction.
