Investor Relations Manager at Old Mutual Limited

Bonga Mriga is an investor relations manager at Old Mutual, which is listed on five exchanges, including the JSE and London Stock Exchange. He grew up in Mthatha and on the long list of people who have played key roles in who he is today, is Sindi Zilwa, who funded his tertiary studies at the University of Cape Town. He completed his articles through the Old Mutual Chartered Accountant Training (OMCAT) Programme.

Having qualified as a CA(SA) six years ago, Bonga has grown to be a well-rounded professional with experience in investments and financial management. He is proud to have had an opportunity to work in London and going on to qualify as a chartered accountant, having begun schooling in rural Mpindweni. His proudest moment professionally is when he was given the opportunity to be a portfolio manager for the Citadel Preference Share Model Portfolio and client portfolios in his third year in investment management.

Being a true product of ‘umntu ngumntu ngabantu’ (becoming through contributions from other people), Bonga takes giving back to society seriously. The following are some of the ways Bonga is doing that and influencing society as a CA(SA):

  • He served on Fun Learning for Youth (FLY) as a tutor for Grade 10s in Gugulethu.
  • He currently mentors in the Qhakaza Kukhanye Foundation (QKF). QKF is finalising a pilot programme where QKF partnered with a high school in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, to provide academic and life skill support to learners in rural areas intent on closing the gap to typical Model C schools.
  • Bonga lectures on the Gospel Ramah Church School of Ministry, offering the money management module aimed at arming students with personal and business financial management skills.
  • At Old Mutual, Bonga is part of the Young Board, a structure comprising eight young professionals in group finance established by the CFO, Casper Troskie, to drive and run with initiatives that shape the culture within their department and thereby the broader Old Mutual group.
  • He is also in the running to be part of the joint management committee representing Old Mutual employees in Superfund.
  • In 2021, Bonga ran a YouTube channel, Bongezile The Nest, that sought to provide support to young professionals entering the workplace.
  • He now mentors Khanyisa Martins on the OMCAT programme, giving back what Craig Botes gave to him, and influencing as he grows.
